 FBA Press Release:

BikeWalkLee Steering Group representative receives Florida Bicycle Association Citizen Bike Advocate of the Year Award

Oldsmar, FL, November 21, 2014—Darla Letourneau, a member of the BikeWalkLee steering group, was presented the Florida Bicycle Association Citizen Bike Advocate of the Year Award by Executive Director Becky Afonso on Friday, November 21, during the monthly Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting.

"While I'm honored by this statewide award, this recognition belongs to the amazing BikeWalkLee steering group team, of which I'm just one member. We are proud of what we've been able to accomplish in support of complete streets through our partnership with 62 supporter organizations, working with the various county and city elected officials, staff, and committees.”  Darla Letourneau stated. “On behalf of the BikeWalkLee team, I would particularly like to thank the Lee MPO Board for its strong support for expanding the biking and walking infrastructure throughout the county, focusing on the safety of all road users, and promoting a balanced multi-modal transportation system."

By definition, “Complete Streets” are streets for everyone. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work and are now formally part of the area’s planning and implementation process, as is a recognition of pedestrians and bicyclists as legitimate and important users of the transportation network.

“Lee County is a better place for cyclists and pedestrians because of the work of Darla and the BikeWalkLee coalition.” Florida Bicycle Association Executive Director Becky Afonso expressed.

The Florida Bicycle Association is a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1997 for educational and charitable purposes and is a tax-exempt corporation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

The Florida Bicycle Association awards are presented to worthy recipients for their contributions to bicycling.  The purpose of the awards is to bring attention to the efforts and achievements of groups, organizations and individuals that help deliver our mission to advocate and educate for excellence in bicycling in Florida.
